The Centre at Millennium Park was created to meet the needs of one of the nation's fastest growing regions. The 61,000 square-foot multi-level complex is part of Johnson City's Medical Technology Corridor.
The unique design of the facility incorporates 21st Century communication technologies second to none in the United States. The Centre offers a variety of room configurations, from "teaching-in-the-round" and a state-of-the-art executive boardroom to a giant ballroom.
The Centre is the hub of the new Millennium Park, located adjacent to ETSU and its affiliated medical school, the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Johnson City Medical Center. Millennium Park will soon become a retail center offering shopping, restaurants and a new hotel.
Don't miss your chance to see the Centre at Millennium Park! You can check out their website at www.centreatmillenniumpark.com.
Northeast State Students Will Participate in National Engineers Week Activities
The first annual Engineers Day at Northeast State Technical Community College will be held on February 23, 2000. An informational meeting was held on January 6 with area engineers to discuss the formation of a new Pre-Engineering Program Advisory Committee. Because of this meeting, pre-engineering students at Northeast State have been given the opportunity to participate in the Discover "E" program. Volunteers plan to visit 28 area schools reaching over 3,000 students. Northeast State will supply 3,000 brochures for the Pre-Engineering Program and 3,000 brochures for the Chemical Technology Program. The engineering teams will distribute these to the students and guidance counselors along with brochures supplied by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE).
The student TSPE Club at Northeast State is affiliated with the Upper East Tennessee Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers. Northeast State students will accompany engineers on some of their visits.

Root Cause Failure Analysis of Eastman Steam Rupture/Power Outage
Date: February 10, 2000
Time: 11:30 AM 12:30 PM
Place: B-150 Auditorium
At approximately 1:07 PM on November 3, 1998, a 12" branch 600 lb. steam line on a pipe bridge near the center of the Tennessee Eastman Division (TED) plant ruptured catastrophically. A 36" long section of the line upstream of a decommissioned venturi flow meter failed, resulting in a major steam leak. The leak led to the loss of 600-lb. header pressure throughout the plant, resulting in the shutdown of all steam generation equipment, and the loss of production throughout most of the TED facility for a period of 5-7 days.
Because this incident occurred in a section of steam piping over 30 years old, immediate concerns focused around the vulnerability of the entire network to similar failures. This program will discuss the resulting root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and the surprising results obtained from the analysis of the ruptured pipeline, which uncovered a root cause completely different from that assumed by the team at the start of the investigation.
Expect to be entertained and educated about RCFA by Peter N. Lodal who, as a senior technical associate with Eastman Chemical Company, leads the Technical Services Section with the Plant Protection Department. A 23-year Eastman employee, Pete holds a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue. He has spent most of his career in Process Design, Loss Prevention, Risk Assessment, and Consequence Modeling. He is a member of the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) Technical Steering Committee and current chair of Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) Process Safety Subteam.

Career Services Workshop
ur Career Services Workshop on January 8, 2000, was a great success based on the feedback received from a number of the approximately 40 attendees. Many thanks to Betty Feehan, Manager of AIChEs Career Services Department, and to Allan Fluharty, Chicago Section Officer and AIChE Career Services Ambassador, who presented the workshop. Thanks also to George Schneider of Cantech, Inc., who shared his personal experiences of dealing with job losses due to corporate reorganizations and downsizings, to John Aycock, Joe Bays, and Brad Overturf for help with arrangements and/or with the resume review/critique session, and to First Broad Street United Methodist Church for the use of their facilities for the workshop. Special thanks also go to Dick Hinton of Right Management Consultants who helped us to get information on the workshop to their client chemical engineers who recently lost jobs. Via this workshop, we were able to provide helpful information about job searching, networking, and interviewing, and about available AIChE resources and benefits, to a number of currently unemployed chemical engineers and others from our area. We were also able to provide peer review of resumes and one-on-one help sessions for those who desired them.
If you know of an unemployed chemical engineer or others who were not able to attend the workshop, but who might be interested in the career services packets, workshop overheads, and other materials which were handed out at the workshop, please have them get in touch with David Denton (229-6559 or dldenton@mounet.com) who has some extra copies. Also, continue to check our local section website (http://www.geocities.com/aiche_etenn/aiche.html) and the AIChE national website (http://www.aiche.org) for related information and helpful resources. Anyone desiring further help or information regarding AIChEs Career Services Department may access their website at http://www.aiche.org/employment, contact their Career and Employment Hotline at 1-800-803-3446, or contact Betty Feehan at 1-212-591-7524 or e-mail bettf@aiche.org. If you would like to have a resume/cover letter critiqued by staff in AIChEs Career Services Department, you may fax it to 1-212-591-8898 or e-mail it to careerservices@aiche.org.
