October AIChE Meeting
"Everything I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned in Distillation and Kinetics"
Clare Marshall is a professional career coach, chemical engineer, newspaper columnist, and our speaker for the October meeting of the East Tennessee Chapter of AIChE on October 11, 2000 at Giuseppe's restaurant in Kingsport, Tennessee. Clare will give us a refreshing look at achieving a balanced career and life in her talk entitled "Everything I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned in Distillation and Kinetics." She will explain how one's energy can be distilled into its component parts including overheads, which bring joy, and bottoms which are the things we struggle with and require energy inputs. With all the uncertainties of today's fast changing but opportunity-filled job market, now is a great time to consider your values, setting boundaries, and life balance. It is also an opportunity to have some Q&A with a professional career coach. Clare writes a regular column called "The Coaches Corner" which can be found in the Greenville (SC) Journal.
This is the only dinner (evening) meeting of the year for the East Tennessee Section, so it is very important to attend and enjoy the camaraderie of your peers and expand your connections by meeting other ChemE's in our area. You can speed up your food service by pre-ordering from the Giuseppe's menu. The menu, instructions, and map are located on the local section website below:
http://www.geocities.com/aiche_etenn/Octmtg.html
You may also order from the menu after you arrive if you wish.
Please make your reservation by Tuesday, October 10 by e-mail (tnolen@eastman.com) or by phone to Tim Nolen, 423-229-8287.

Message From The Chair
Our local section successfully launched our new 2000-2001 program year with an interesting program on golf ball design and manufacture (see write-up elsewhere in this newsletter). Our new program committee has developed an excellent and varied slate of additional programs for the coming year. Make sure you mark these on your calendar and plan to attend as many as you can. On October 11, our next program, entitled "Everything I Ever Needed to Know, I Learned in Distillation and Kinetics", will be presented by Clare Marshall at Giuseppes Restaurant in Kingsport at 6:30 PM. On October 5-6, we are also offering locally a continuing education course from AIChE National ("Bulk Pharmaceutical and Chemical Process Development").
Our section is beginning the nomination process for officers and directors for the 2001 calendar year. If you are interested in serving in one of these positions for next year (Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, or Director), please contact David Denton at 229-6559. Also, if you are interested in serving on one of our committees (Program Committee, Nominating Committee, Awards Committee), or as one of our ETEAC representatives, or as a co-editor of this Pipeline newsletter, please also contact David Denton at 229-6559. One of our co-editors from last year has moved and our remaining editor, Jennifer Mize, needs some help immediately. If you are willing to serve as co-editor and edit our newsletter on alternating months with Jennifer, please let David Denton or Jennifer know ASAP. Dont miss these opportunities to serve your local professional society.

Attention Professional Engineers
Did you know that you can fulfill ½ of your annual Continuing Education Requirement simply by attending AIChE programs? Its true and were going to make the documentation part easy for you! Six of this years programs meet the eligibility requirements for Professional Development Hour (PDH) credit. After each of these programs, we will distribute certificates to attendees, which can be used as documentation if the Engineers and Architects Board audits you. So come to the programs and bring a friend!
Recap of September AIChE Meeting
"Everything You Wanted to Know About Golf Balls, but Were Afraid to Ask"
The first AIChE program of our new 2000-2001 year was held on September 13, 2000. Our speaker was George Wallace, Director of Product Development Worldwide Golf R&D, Dunlop Slazenger Group (substitute for John Calabria, VP of R&D for Dunlop Slazenger Group, who was called overseas at the last minute). The Dunlop Slazenger plant in Westminster, SC, produces over 120 million Maxfli, Dunlop, and Slazenger brand golf balls each year (around 15% of the total world supply). Mr. Wallace is a chemical engineer with a background and masters degree in the area of polymer structure and properties. He gave an excellent and very interesting technical presentation which covered the history of golf ball design, the rules and specifications governing golf ball manufacture and testing, the influence of ball design and golf swing on the performance of golf balls, and the answers to some frequently asked questions about golf balls. He presented information about the three main classes of golf balls (wound core, solid core, and multi-piece core) and advantages and disadvantages of each type. He discussed the effects of various design parameters (such as dimples, hardness/feel, and compression) and of various environmental conditions (such as wind, humidity, and altitude) on golf ball performance. He provided advice on how to select a golf ball to help improve a hook or slice-prone golf swing. The presentation concluded with an interactive question and answer period. If anyone wishes to view the PowerPoint slides from Mr. Wallaces presentation, please contact David Denton (229-6559).

Volunteers Needed for 2000 Fourth Grader's Day
Preparations for the 2000 Fourth Grader's Day Celebration of Chemistry are underway and we need your help. Be a part of the celebration this year! "Fourth Grader's Day" is celebrated on Wednesday Nov. 1st and Thursday Nov. 2nd. On these days, we invite approximately 1300 4th grade students from area elementary schools to the Employee Center to view chemical demonstrations and exhibits. These days are aimed at illustrating the importance of science to 4th graders. Many volunteers are needed! Our biggest need is for demonstrators and escorts for Nov.1st and 2nd. We also need volunteers to sell T-shirts in their building or area. Please contact the following persons if you are interested in volunteering this year:
Escorts: Melissa Shelton (x1917, mailto:mlshelton@eastman.com) - Escort children through exhibits and demos.
Demonstrations: Crystal Kendrick (x7285, mailto:crystalk@eastman.com) - Perform demonstrations.
T-Shirts: Coralie Fleenor (x4717, mailto:coralief@eastman.com) - Coordinate and participate in t-shirt sales at Eastman and throughout the community.
Many thanks to all those who have taken time in the past to serve as role models for fourth graders from the area. We are all busier than ever, but the one-on-one time this event provides to the participating children is more important than ever. Please consider volunteering again (or for the 1st time)!!!!
