Message From the Chair
Our local section had another great
program on October 11 (Clare Marshall’s program entitled “Everything I Ever Needed to
Know, I Learned in Distillation and Kinetics”). It was good to have ten members of the Pre-Engineering program at
Northeast State Technical Community College to join us for this meeting. Our next program is a plant tour of King
Pharmaceuticals on November 3, which promises to be very interesting (see
write-up elsewhere in this newsletter).
Our nominations for officers and directors for the 2001 calendar
year are just about complete and the slate of candidates looks excellent. I will be sending out an election ballot,
along with a short bio of each candidate, within the next week or two. Be watching your mail for this ballot and
please vote for the candidates of your choice and return the ballot as soon as
possible prior to the requested deadline.
If you are interested in serving on one of our committees (Program Committee,
Nominating Committee, Awards Committee) or as a co-editor of this Pipeline
newsletter, please contact David Denton at 229-6559. Your volunteer support and your attendance at our monthly
programs are helping to make this an active and vibrant local section of
AIChE. Thanks!

October Meeting Recap
The
October meeting of the East Tennessee Section of AIChE was held at Giuseppe's
Restaurant in Kingsport where 27 members and guests enjoyed the chemical
engineering fellowship. We were
especially happy to have ten pre-engineering students from Northeast State
Technical Community College with us.
Clare
Marshall, licensed chemical engineer, professional coach, and Vice President of
the Western Carolina Section of AIChE, gave a talk entitled "Everything I
Needed to Know, I Learned in Distillation and Kinetics." Clare talked about distilling life into
energy producers (the overheads) filled with joy, and energy consumers
(the bottoms), which are tolerations.
To do this, one must reduce the tolerations that drain our energy,
identify our needs and healthy ways to meet them, and finally to make
adjustments to orient our lives around our values. Achieving a balanced life by meeting needs while remaining
true to our inner values is the design that leads to joy. This achievement of balance and joy must be
made in the life reactor. We must set boundaries
to protect our joy, raise our standards to fully express our values, and
take action to make it happen.
The final step is to 'mathematically' integrate our joy 'rate equation'
from home to work. That is, the
fullness of joy depends on the integrity of having needs and values met
in all parts of our lives.
We thank everyone who attended and wish them the best of luck in producing joy using their own process design!

attendees, which can be used as documentation if the Engineers and Architects
Board audits you. So come to the programs and bring a friend!
