Toy F. Reid

On July 26, 2009, Toy F. Reid, an AIChE Fellow, passed away. This marked an end to a life fille= d with accomplishments and contributions both to our profession and our community—contributions so great that in 2001, former Eastman CEO Ear= nie Deavenport named the Eastman Employee Center after him. He was a 59-year member of AIChE.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Please review his accomplishments = below.

Reid retired February 1, 1989, as an executi= ve vice president of Eastman Kodak Company and general manager, Eastman Chemic= als Division, after a 40-year career. Mr. Reid headed the Eastman Chemicals Division from 1979 until his retirement. He had served as an assistant general manager of the Chemicals Division and as a vice president, Eastman Kodak Company, for the five years prior to that.

The Eastman executive joined Tennessee Eastman Company in 1948 as an assistant research chemical engineer in Research Laboratories. Following subsequent Research assignments, he was appointed superintendent of the Cellulose Este= rs Development & Control Department and later became superintendent of the Cellulose Esters Division.

Mr. Reid served as assistant plant manager of Holston Defense Corporation before serving as plant manager of Carolina Eastman Company in Columbia, S.C., from 1965-69. He returned to Tennessee Eastman Company as assistant works manager and was appointed a vice president of the company in 1972. He was named a senior vice president of Tennessee Eastman the following year. His appointm= ent as an executive vice president of Eastman Kodak Company and appointment as general manager, Eastman Chemicals Division, came in 1979.

A native of Rock Hill, S.C., Mr. Reid earned a BS degree in chemistry from the University of South Carolina. He also received a BS degree in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois and an MS degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. &= nbsp;

He served as a member of the Eastman Kodak Company board of directors and its executive committee. He also served on boards of directors for several other companies including Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company, American Electric Power Company, American Electric Power Company, Inc., First Americ= an Corporation, Holston Valley Health Care, Inc., The United Way of Greater Kingsport, and Junior Achievement of Kingsport. He also served on the board at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. He formerly was a director of the American Industrial Health Council and the Chemical Manufacturers Association. He has been active in numerous civic and professional organizations. He served as a member of the Tennessee State Bo= ard of Education and the board of governors of Emory and Henry College.

Mr. Reid received numerous awards including the 1988 Commercial Development Association Honor Award as well as receiving the George D. Heaton Award for Leadership upon his retirement in July of 1989. The Eastman retiree was recognized for his example of honesty, integrity, and mutual respect in supervisory relationships and his support and promotion of policies aimed at fostering teamwork, employee well-being, opportunities for advancement, good citizenship and positive attitudes.

Mr. Reid was a registered professional engineer in Tennessee, a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and a member of the American Soci= ety for Quality Control and the Society of Chemical Industry.=
